Daylight Saving Time:
As the start of Daylight Saving Time approaches, this is a good time to check or update Fire Extinguishers and check the batteries in Smoke Alarms.

Portable fire extinguishers are proven to save lives and protect property when a fire strikes.  Daylight Saving Time is a good time to review some cyclical safety chores, such as inspection of the fire extinguishers in your home and office, and a check of the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Proof that in the event of fire, properly installed and maintained smoke detectors can help save lives by giving early warning and allowing sufficient time for occupants to reach safety was illustrated when a blazing toilet roll ignited the balcony of an Otago student flat.
What started as a prank of "toilet papering" the house was followed by an unknown person throwing a burning toilet roll onto the balcony of the Grange St flat about 4am on a Saturday morning, setting fire to a tinder dry couch which then raged through the wall of an upstairs bedroom.  The occupant fortunately woke and roused her flatmates at the same time as the smoke detectors activated.  A quick response by the Dunedin Fire Service to her 111 call resulted in saving the property from destruction.
